A Hard Rain, p. 3

There’s a great sense of freedom in taking a road at random, a whim of the steering wheel and just see where it goes. In this case we saw a street with the name of my dog. So there we turned.

After a few miles the street led us high up into the foothills on the north side of Carson City. The street became a dirt road and headed up into the mountains. We followed it, winding up the switchbacks as the sky darkened and the first snowflakes began to fall
Near the top of the grade we discovered the vast expanse of a Cinderlite mine. The entire hillside for hundreds of acres has been bitten off to extract this black volcanic rock which resembles the “lava rock” of a gas grill.
We took a few samples from the tailings by the side of the road, though I knew these not-very-attractive rock souvenirs were destined to decrease in value markedly by the time we returned to Reno.(Pan left to see the Cinderlite mine.)
