There’s a great sense of freedom in taking a road at random, a whim of the steering wheel and just see where it goes. In this case we saw a street with the name of my dog. So there we turned. |

After a few miles the street led us high up into the foothills on the north side of Carson City. The street became a dirt road and headed up into the mountains. We followed it, winding up the switchbacks as the sky darkened and the first snowflakes began to fall | |||
Near the
top of the grade we discovered the vast expanse of a Cinderlite mine. The
entire hillside for hundreds of acres has been bitten off to extract this
black volcanic rock which resembles the “lava rock” of a gas
grill. We took a few samples from the tailings by the side of the road, though I knew these not-very-attractive rock souvenirs were destined to decrease in value markedly by the time we returned to Reno.(Pan left to see the Cinderlite mine.) |
